Belt Bag from Birka 154
This leather betl bag-pouch is a reconstruction based on fittings from Grave 154 in Birka, dated to the 9th–10th century.
Pouches, belt bags were small, decorated bags worn on the belt. Bags in this decorative style most likely originate from the East and reached Europe with the migration of nomads. Many analogies and similar fittings have been found in various parts of Eastern and Central Europe (mainly Hungary), as well as in major trading centers like Birka.
The pouch is handmade from natural, vegetable-tanned, soft cowhide leather, and is waxed. It is adorned with a set of cast brass fittings. The edges are finished with thin goat leather trim, and a seal/gasket has been sewn along the seam.

Belt bag from Birka, Grave 154 – Sweden, 9th–10th Century
This leather betl bag-pouch is a reconstruction based on fittings from Grave 154 in Birka, dated to the 9th–10th century.

When examining historical sources, we come across many artifacts, including very well-preserved examples where the leather part of the bag also survived to our times. Thanks to the abundance of archaeological and iconographic material, we are able to faithfully reproduce these items.
